QQ launched a YouTube wannabe in China - QQ Video. This is the first outcome of Tencent's new initiative QQ Labs. Most of the features are the same as YouTube's, however, it also it integrates P2P technology for less bandwidth and better user experience and make heavy use of AJAX. QQ users will be able to share their videos with their buddies which immediately gives the a great advantage over other Video sharing services in China.

From virtual shoes to real life shoes. QQ the leading IM in China is launching QQ shoes. Pacific Epoch reports that QQ users not satisfied with the virtual QQ clothing for their avatars can now purhase real life QQ branded sneakers. Sneaker manufacturer Sansda will produce them but they will not be available until 2008. I guess we all have to wear our virtual QQ sneakers until then. Hope they will not wear out by then...
Mike is reporting that the Skype protocol has been hacked by Chinese company. There is now a Skype clone in China. Why am I not surprised? There are full of clever programmers in China.. Last year I visited a totally unknown Chinease VoIP company and made a call from via their service home to my wifes mobile phone in Israel. The quality was fantastic. Much better than Skype's

What is happening? Everybody is going IM, MySpace, VoIP crazy! AOL announced their IM-based AOL Phoneline service , MySpace launched their own IM-client , AOL then counters with the alleged MySpace-killer - AIM Pages, to be finally be followed by Windows Live Messenger Beta.
To be honest, nothing new under then sun, more than copy cat-variation-on-a-theme stuff. The AIM-pages will hardy be a MySpace killer - let's face it AIM is big but has no cool factor - just plain vanilla community. AOL Phoneline, might be a good one, considering that Skype has never really taken off in the US (due to the low cost on national phone calls). Free-inbound costs might make a difference. What about MySpace then, yet another IM? How many do we need to have on our desktop? I can understand that a big online community prefers their own IM client, but still..
Finally the Live Messenger. I downloaded the beta, and I like the look and feel of it, but except for the access to shared files, drag & drop files, address book etc what is really new here? Still, I do like the look n' feel of it, much better than the previous one. Ah and yes, you can make phone calls via a USB– phone as well – that is actually really good – although I will continue to use my Olympia Skype Phone.

Skype just launched Skypecast - A way of having conversations in public. Skypecasts are live, moderated discussions that allow groups of Skype users anywhere in the world to discuss shared interests. Talking about Naked Conversations Scoble! The Skype Beta 2.5 just released, is also enabling users to send SMS directly to any mobile phone from Skype, a long wanted feature. Skype is really showing that the continue to be the most innovative of all the existing IM's and VoIP applications. Now we are just waiting for the ability to record a Skype conversation and then have it analysed through Nemesyscos VoiceAnalysis Technology too.

Ouriel Ohayon, a great friend and a former colleague from my ICQ days, is taking up a new position as a General Manager for LGiLab, a new joint venture between Gemini Israel Funds and Lightspeed. I am actually very proud for being the one who connected the both. Ouriel is a very bright and talented guy who knows his way around the Internet industry just as well as around the piano. He also knows what is cooking in the Web2.0 pot as the Chef- in-Charge of Techcrunch France. Danny, don’t forget my % on your deals . I wish Ouriel, Danny and the rest of the Gemini team all the best with their new venture, and if you are an Israeli start-up in the making looking for funding, contact Ouriel (not me) on [email protected] .
