Linux Journal: Maxthon The Real Firefox-Killer!

This is quite amusing. It seems that the interview I gave to ReadWriteWeb a few days ago have stirred up quite some emotions. Believe it or not, Linux Journal calls Maxthon The Real Firefox-Killer...

For the real challenger comes not from Microsoft directly; instead, it's from  a new browser that uses IE's rendering engine,  Trident, but which is produced completely independently of the company. This means  that it can offer all the "benefits" of 100% compatibility with what is still  the dominant Internet browser, together with a host of real improvements -  some of which go beyond even Firefox.        This new competitor is called  Maxthon..

Interesting take. I couldn't agree more with the author. Besides the fact that we are not fighting any browser war. We are just a very good alternative. There is plenty of space for all of us, just like there is a market for more than Ford and Volvo..

BTW, read the comments - quite interesting..

Maxthon for Linux anybody?

Bill Tai on Maxthon

This is a short interview with Bill Tai, Venture Capitalist at Charles River Ventures. I asked Bill why he invested in Maxthon, the changing role of the browser and opportunities ahead. I shot the interview last at CRV in Menlo Park week, days after the release of IE7 and the day before the Firefox 2 just after I came back from a meeting with Mozilla. This is my first stumbling step as a Vlogger so please have mercy (the light could have been better;).

I plan to run a regular Maxthon Show, portraying developers and Maxthon-fans around the world so please let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to see.

Busy Days Ahead

Have an intensive period ahead (when is it never?) first to California for a week and then straight on to Beijing. Maxthon is entering into a very intensive period, staffing up in Beijing on the development side to deliver more frequent releases of Maxthon 1.x, speed up the development of  Maxthon 2.0 and release a bunch of useful plugin's.

A lot is cooking and hopefully you will all see the result of this over the next couple of months. I will also be visiting our new office in Beijing and will try to take some pictures that I can share with you.

Charles River Ventures Invests in Maxthon

crv logo

I know we have been keeping you waiting for an announcement for too long. So here we go, we are very excited to announce that one of the leading and most respected US venture capital firms, Charles River Ventures, has invested in Maxthon.  CRV joins early investors Morten Lund (Skype seed investor) and WI Harper who invested in Maxthon, June last year. Of all the VC's pitching us (yes I agree that is a quite unusual side to be on..) ever since we received the Red Herring Asia 100 award, CRV really impressed us the most. Except for their genuine passion and deep network, they also share our vision of where the future of the Web is going.

The deal was lead by Bill Tai, general partner at CRV. Bill is an amazing guy with a fantastic track record, named by Forbes to their list of "Top 100 Dealmakers in Technology". We have already enjoyed working together on several deals prior to the investment, and I can say with complete confidence that they have already delivered.

The investment will be used to further fuel development , new services, marketing and geographical expansion. We know how anxious you all have been waiting for more frequent releases, additional features and more marketing efforts. Now we will finally be able to live up to those demands and show the world what a great browser Maxthon really is, and what a fantastic community it has.

Full Press release here. Red Herring article here. Techcrunch post. Om Malik here.

Digg it!

Google In China & Kai Fu Lee

New York Times has published a preview of an upcoming article in this weekend Time magazine. The article also portraits Kai Fu Lee, that Google snatched from Microsoft to head up Google's China operations.

"For many young people in China, Kai-Fu Lee is a celebrity. Not quite on the level of a movie star like Edison Chen or the singers in the boy band F4, but for a 44-year-old computer scientist who invariably appears in a somber dark suit, he can really draw a crowd. When Lee, the new head of operations for Google in China, gave a lecture at one Chinese university about how young Chinese should compete with the rest of the world, scalpers sold tickets for $60 apiece. At another, an audience of 8,000 showed up; students sprawled out on the ground, fixed on every word."

Quite amazing. But I like the idea of the celebrity status for a hard working skilled professional - it's a good role model to counter the regular movie and pop stars.

Maxthon In Red Herring

Maxthon is supposed to be featured in the latest edition of Red Herring. The feature article is discussing "Browser Wars" and both Jeff & myself was interviewed by Priya Ganapati who wrote the story. Browser War and more in the April 3 issue of the Red Herring reaches newsstands on Monday. I have not yet read the article myself so I save my comments for now.
